"Code. Glory. Good."

August 8-9

Patrick Morris-Suzuki, Sam Harrell

DeepSight is a suite of tools for helping visually impaired people using Google Tango and Android.

Using the depth sensing capabilities of the Google Tango tablet, Team DeepSight developed audio feedback of distance to obstacles fed through bone conducting headphones. Beeps are of higher and lower frequencies depending on the distance, and on the left or right depending on location.

Using Qualcomm Vuforia, recognition of known objects was set up to serve as landmarks to help people with visual impairments navigate more easily.

Using the twilio MMS api, an activity which automatically takes a photo on launch and MMSes it to a known phone number was set up so that a person can quickly ask their friends or family to help identify an object.

Using the Braintree API, a crowdfunding site was set up to pay for the tablets, allowing friends and family to pledge amounts smaller than the cost of the tablet and aggregate the pledges. The SendGrid API is used to send notifications of the transactions.

Quake Alert

Chris Jeon, Jason Carter

Quake Alert is a real time earthquake early warning system that provides notifications of shaking, so you can be safer during the next earthquake. Using geographically distributed sensors to report to their regional alert center, when earthquakes are detected, notifications are sent out on all channels and communication & humanitarian efforts can begin. They used the accelerometer in the Adruino to detect the location of the earthquake and realtime communication to broadcast the alert. They added Venmo links to the twitter feed to give people the ability to donate.
